How to Maintain a Professional Sports Pitch

Posted on 27th October 2017

Although the attention of professional sports concentrates on the glitz and the glamour of huge transfer fees, nail-biting action and the ins and outs of the athletes lives, the industry of professional sports stretches far beyond what the players are doing. Away from the games, groundsmen and women have the task of maintaining the stage for the athletes to ply their trade every weekend, ensuring the pitch is in a pristine condition every time the teams take to the field. With that in mind, what does the practice of maintaining a sports pitch consist of?

Mowing

Unsurprisingly, one of the most important aspects of maintaining a sports pitch is mowing the lawn. For the benefit of the game and for the benefit of the respective teams, the pitch needs to be short enough a ball to be able to skid over the surface, but equally long enough for a player’s boot to get enough purchase on the ground in order to move freely and securely. To allow for all of these variables, the grass length should be kept between 25-30mm and should never exceed 60mm. This length should also contribute to the aesthetics of the pitch, giving it the snooker table-effect groundsmen and women aim for.

Soil

We spoke earlier about players being able to get enough purchase on the pitch, and although the grass does lay a part in this, the soil of a sports pitch is vital for allowing fluid movement across the ground. To achieve the perfect soil for a sports pitch, deep spiking for aeration will help maintain drainage during the wetter months and it will also even out patches in the grass which have suffered divots. What is important to remember when dealing with the soil for a sports pitch is that the ground must not be too hard that it does not easily accept the studs on a player’s boots, but it should not become too soft, either. If the soil becomes too soft, the pitch will churn up under the players foots, leaving the ground with patches reminiscent of molehills.
